It takes 人 時間 to 〜   人が〜するのに時間がかかる

• It took her two years to write the novel.

訳)彼女がその小説を書くのに2年かかった。

itの代わりに人や作業を主語にできる。

She took two years to write the novel.

The novel took her two years to write.

It took two years for her to write the novel.

また、同じ構文を用いて時間だけでなく「人が〜するのに労力がかかる」

という意味をも表せる。

• It took me a lot of courage to break the silence.

訳)沈黙を破るのにはかなりの勇気が必要だった。
